This is my first screenshot of my Linux Mint desktop. I've been slowly getting my hands wet and spent more than a few hours trying to get Conky up to par.

Conky - System text on left side of the screen - very neat (I saw a bunch of desktops with conky on them and kept thinking, what is all that text? What is that named and where can I find it? I luckily stumbled upon it in the MintInstall package one night.)
